the philosophy behind janetjewelry.com
I have always loved fashion and accessories; not necessarily what was "in" or what everyone else was wearing, but for me, it was a form of self-expression that reflected my mood, could be done on a budget or on a whim, and could be as chameleon-esque as my quirky personality.
I started making my own jewelry mostly because I loved sterling silver, but I couldn't find "interesting" pieces to wear on a quotidian basis. For years, I searched craft fairs, galleries, stores, and the internet, and I found jewelry that were either:
a) really beautiful to look at but not something you'd want to bang around everyday, and TOTALLY out of my budget, or
b) mass produced, run-of-the-mill, cheapy BORING jewelry that every jewelry vendor on the street or mall bought and sold.
Where was the middle ground? Can one be on a budget and still be glam? Can the low-maintenance chick find durable, funky jewelry that she can actually wear without stress? Heck, yeah!
It's all about personal choice, and wearing what makes you feel good about yourself. Big earrings? Little Earrings? Chokers or Lariats? Bracelets or Anklets? Red or Blue? Ultra-feminine, or chunky and industrial? Lots of jewelry or just the one piece you absolutely can't live without?
I strongly believe in the right to choose and I can't live without options! Therefore, at janetjewelry.com, I've made sure that almost every item has options, i.e. color, sizes, and/or lengths, AND, there's a whole array of jewelry to choose from, i.e. casual to evening, minimal to pop, $6 to $550. This focus on choice is probably most evident in the Postmodern Candy Series, where people basically "design" their own jewelry and I make it for them. It makes it that much more interesting for me to make, and I know it means that much more for the wearer, so it's a win-win situation!
I tell my husband all the time, "Why choose to be ordinary if you can choose to be extra-ordinary? Where's the challenge in 'being ordinary'?"
I think there are enough ordinary people out there.
My jewelry (and philosophy!) might not be for everyone, but if you're the kind of person who doesn't want to be like everyone else, who values having choices in life, who finds joy in self-expression, I salute your departure from the "ordinary" world and hope you find my website and jewelry worthy of being "a bit off!"
