| Cliffnotes on Janet (and other things you can live without!) Addendum, 5/13/02 When I discovered that I loved jewelry: I think I was in the first grade, and I had a bunch of trinket jewelry that my mom, dad, and grandma gave me, and I decided one day that I loved wearing jewelry, and that I was going to wear them all at the same time. My mom tried to talk me out of it, but I insisted on going to school with everything on. I can't remember if the other kids made fun of me or not, but I do remember it making me feel really special. I think jewelry is all about making oneself feel special...otherwise, why would we wear it? Favorite Reality TV: The Osbornes! I don't watch all that much TV since I don't have cable at the store (just a black & white 5" TV!), so I have no idea when TV shows are on...it's just a matter of what's on when I'm home, but I always wish to see this or... Favorite Sitcom at the moment: Grounded for Life Favorite Home Improvement Show: Trading Spaces. I just love the concept of creating a whole new living space and on a time and money budget, too! Store Display I always look forward to seeing every week: Raymond Dragon in Chelsea. They care! K-Mart or Target: Target (they have Hello Kitty!) What I'm reading now: Just finished Fellowship of the Rings, and started The Two Towers Favorite way to make coffee: I bought an antique Cona Vacuum Pot Coffee Maker, which I like to call my "Mad Scientist Coffee Kit." Will post pictures of how it works later. It's the coolest thing! And, makes a damn good cup of coffee! Favorite Art Period: I really love Italian Baroque Art. Not that I'd have it in my house, but I just really appreciate it--it's so dynamic and interesting to look at. Favorite City to hang out for a day: Rome Why: It's total eye candy from so many different periods in history. I love cities that appreciate beautiful things in their everyday life. Favorite Sculpture: Daphne & Apollo, by Bernini, at the Galleria Borghese, Rome Why: Bernini is probably one of my most favorite sculptors. I mean, working with marble is subtractive, meaning, once it's chipped off, that's it (unlike working with clay). Yet, he makes the most amazing pieces from a slab of rock! I like this one in particular because not only does it show his amazing ability to make marble look "fleshy," but the details in Daphne's hands and feet turning into a laurel tree is unbelievably phenomenal. Favorite Building in New York: There are so many that I really like, it's hard to decide, but stylistically, I can't get enough of the Chrysler Building. I think I just like shiny, silvery things? It's imaginative; there's nothing like it in the world. I'm also fascinated by the Main Research Public Library by Bryant Park. They just finished renovating it a few years ago and it was a treat to do a lot of my research there when I was in grad school. There's a free tour of the library everyday at 2pm, and I highly recommend it. Favorite bagel: Cinnamon Raisin Bagel, Toasted, with Butter Potato or Rice: Definitely rice. |
