Just a few moments before the accident.... Merv went out to Joshua Tree in CA for a press ride with Suzuki to test out their new bike, the 2004 DL650 V-Strom (it's half sport, half touring bike), and he wrecked on a nasty turn over some gravel. Previously, American Airlines had lost his luggage, so he was missing his full Armor Leather Outfit from Alpinestars (above left), which wouldn't have helped the wrist injury much, but would have prevented his knee injury. He only wore his jeans (what he was wearing on the plane), and Suzuki was kind enough to lend him a jacket. Luckily, he had hand-carried his helmet, so he had that with him.

The first day home.... They put 12 stitches in his knee while in CA, put it in a leg brace, put a splint on his arm (as is) and sent him home immediately... We couldn't get a doctor to see him in NYC over the 3 day holiday, so he had no choice but to sit on the couch (with his feline companions) and veg out with the help of extra-strengthVicodin.

The Battlescars He flipped the bike, so they say he's really lucky to have only a broken wrist, but he has some nasty bruises all over....

The nasty knee puncture He didn't break anything, but his knee required 12 stitches, and the doctors in CA said for him to see a doctor in 2 days to check for infection and redo the dressing, but again, I couldn't get an appointment for Merv over the 3 day weekend.... Luckily for Merv, one of my best friends from high school, Dr. Efren Baria, just happened to be visiting NYC that weekend with his wife, and dropped by to make a housecall! Dr. Baria is finishing up his residency in anesthesiology at Northwestern Hospital's ER in Chicago.

The gigantic strawberry.... It was still a bit swollen, but Dr. Baria said it looked really good, no infection, and added that Merv's really lucky that he didn't do more damage....

The Cleanup Here's Dr. Baria tending Merv's knee--it's just so strange because it seems like we were both just kids in high school just a while back, and now he's already a doctor, and I'm just making jewelry.... My dad's probably wondering when I'm going to utilize my graduate degree...oh well.

Post-Cleanup A very happy Merv. On Extra-strength Vicodin. Yay for long-time friends! Thanks, Dr. Efren!

The Orthopaedic Surgery Appointment The first available appointment I could make for Merv was 6 days after the accident. Here's a photo of the sticker that the ER people put on Merv's temporary splint. I thought it was funny. He had another sticker that said, "Someone in the ER loves me" or something like that, but it fell off somewhere....

The Crooked Arm Here's what Merv's armed looked like when they first took off the splint. OUCH! They did another round of x-rays, and found that he had 2 fractures in his wrist--you can kind of see the crookedness in his wrist here.

January 22, 2004. I took this at Roosevelt Hospital's Ambulatory Surgery Room right before his wrist surgery today. They're going to mend the fracture with a metal plate on one bone, and another rod to hold the other bone. I just picked him up tonight at 8:30pm, and he's super grumpy and in pain, but otherwise okay. His surgery took 3 hours, which is 1 hour longer than expected; they found chips of bone fragments that didn't show up in the x-rays, so they had to deal with that. More to come soon. Thank you to those of you who sent us "get well" wishes!
