I love Hello Kitty and I love food, so what better than a combination of both? Here are some of my "research" finds!

The funny thing is, these were loads of fun to buy, but tasting them was another story.... I was scared to eat these products because my brain kept warning me, "Hey, they must've spent all their time and money on packaging, so it probably tastes like crap!" The good news is, some aren't bad....

"Hello Kitty Potato Fry"
It says "Chicken Flavor," and I'm a bit scared.... Now that I've opened the cute packaging, I'm even more scared: it has 4 large discs, 2.5" wide, and it's definitely not sliced from a potato...it looks like some kind of styrofoam disc....toasted. It's actually surprisingly tasty, kind of like a thin shrimp chip, but with a chicken boullion flavor. But at 50¢ per bag with only 4 thin discs, I'd rather get a bag of Sun Chips.

Hello Kitty Candy
It's a cute little bag (2"x3") filled with little white pellets. It says "Fruit Flavor" on it at the bottom, but when I pop it in my mouth, it tastes like a regular jaw breaker. After a while, you get to a sugary-powdery-fruit flavored center, which tastes kind of like Pez. Pros: cute packaging, only 45¢ per bag, lots of pellets to share! Cons: not my kind of candy; Merv would probably love them.

Hello Kitty Candy Goodie Bag
By the size, I thought that it might be chocolates or something, but this Hello Kitty Bag is a random candy assortment: includes 1 Chupa Chup Lollipop (non-Hello Kitty related; go figure); 1 KeroKeropi Mini Gum Pack; 1 Batzmaru Mini Gum Pack, 1 of each Hello Kitty and Kerokeropi little candy. A bit cheeky that they'd stick a Chupa Chups in this...I feel a bit cheated.

Hello Kitty Kakimochi (Rice Crackers)
They sell these things by the box at train stations in Tokyo! It has a Hello Kitty mark on it in some kind of soy sauce! It doesn't taste bad, it just tastes average. I do, however, very much approve the attention to Hello Kitty detail....

"Hello Kitty Kishimen"
My friend got this for me in Jersey somewhere without knowing that Kishimen are my favorite kinds of Japanese noodles! It's wide, flat noodles, and when I took a closer look, not only is the outside packaging Hello Kitty, but every noodle was stamped with a Hello Kitty Head! How exciting! The bad news is, when you boil the noodles, you can't see the Hello Kitty head anymore, and they look like regular kishimen; the good news is, it tastes like regular kishmen noodles, and I'm impressed that they took the time to do the stamping detail! Also, it has 3 individual servings in the plastic bag, which has a close zip top, so you can enjoy it again later!

"Hello Kitty Crackers"
It says that it's made of 10% cheese, but I can't taste any cheese; nonetheless, these are FANTASTIC!!! Pros: it's buttery, sweet, comes in all kinds of shapes, and they're...buttery.... Con: I went through the entire bag in a few minutes because there were all kinds of shapes, from bunnies, ducks, to even houses, and NO HELLO KITTY! What's up with that? But it does get bonus points for taste!

"Hello Kitty Biscuit"
This is the Hello Kitty snack food to purchase! I would eat these anyday! My husband loves them, too! They're more "biscuits" in the British sense, i.e. more like cookies than what we call "biscuits" in the USA. They're a cross between animal crackers and shortbread cookies, and each one is shaped like Hello Kitty and her friends!

"Hello Kitty Senbei" (Small Rice Crackers)
I'm a kakimochi snob, so I wasn't spectacularly impressed with the taste of these rice cracker bits; a bit on the bland side. Yeah, it's cute that it's individually heart shaped senbei, but I want Hello Kitty! If these were individual HK silhouette heads, I'd definitely get them again; otherwise, I'm not that impressed....

"Hello Kitty Mini Doughnuts"
I kind of put off trying this one because the packaging is cute, but the food itself just looked so bad and artificial.... I finally had the courage to do it today. As expected, the taste is so synthetic, I'm not even sure how to describe it; it's kind of flaky, kind of like a cookie, kind of like Melba Toast. It's not really bad, but it's not really good either. I have no idea what these things are!

Hello Kitty Cheese Puffs
They look pretty scary: imagine opening it up, and it has what looks like 3 styrofoam hotdogs.... The taste isn't as cheesy as the American Cheetos, and if given the choice, I'd definitely grab a bag of Smart Puffs.

Hello Kitty Snack Food Gift Set
For ¥700 ($7), it's a steal since you get a souvenir Hello Kitty plastic cup! Inside the clear plastic wrap: Hello Kitty Chocolate filled Marshmallow; Hello Kitty Fizzy Candy (with Hello Kitty Relief); a pack of Hello Kitty Gummy (in HK shapes! Blueberry & Strawberry flavors--very yummy!); a random non-HK Cookie; a pack of My Melody Biscuit Cookies. I don't like the non-HK stuff in there, but all in all, a happy mix because of the quality of HK stuff inside!

General Research Report: as much as I give these products props for their great packaging on the outside, I felt cheated by some of the products once I opened the package, because no thought went into the Hello Kitty-ness of the inside. I think most of all, the Hello Kitty Biscuits were the best, not only in taste, but because it was Hello Kitty all the way, with Hello Kitty outside, Hello Kitty inside the box, Hello Kitty on the inside packaging, and to finish it off, Hello Kitty shaped cookies to boot! You can't go wrong with that; makes the other product designs look lazy! The Hello Kitty Kishimen takes a close second; I like the entire packaging idea, from the outside packaging, to the stamped noodles, to the ziploc top bag so that I can enjoy the noodles for several meals! Third is the Hello Kitty Crackers: it's so butter-licious! Fourth Place: Hello Kitty Snack Food Gift Set: it did have 2 imposter items in it (thus it takes fourth after the Crackers), but overall, the high quality of the HK goodies inside and the fact that you get the HK cup--not a bad deal at all!
