DIY--THEME PARTIES....Superbowl Party--2003
Merv's a hardcore Raiders Fan....
Life is much more interesting when you have an obsession. You can turn any "ordinary" foodstuffs into something "EXTRA"-ordinary! It's all about PRESENTATION....

My Homemade Raider's Apple Pie
Just the usual, Mom's apple pie recipe, but my mom also taught me the importance of maximizing the extra crust for creative use--you can put a smile on someone special's face, just with a little extra dough.

Point #1: don't handle the dough too much, or it'll get tough.

Raiders Cupcakes
I spent all my time on the pie, & didn't have time for these, so I used a Pillsbury chocolate cake mix, but substituted vodka & kahlua for water, for quick "Black Russian Cupcakes." I whipped up "White Russian" frosting out of kahlua, vodka, and powdered suger, then dipped it in black sugar & put those pirate sword looking toothpicks on top.

Alternatives: any party store will have an assortment of decorative toothpicks, and most grocery stores have colored sugar. What a difference a little effort makes!

My makeshift Raiders Decoration
This party was last minute, and all the good Superbowl decorations were already gone from the party store, so I just got this stuff from the "Over the Hill" party section.

For "Fun" THEMED events, Merv & I think: "The tackier, the better" (i.e. how far can you push the envelope?). Balloons and streamers are super cheap, and add a quick, festive, touch! Better than nothing, eh?

Chef Merv
Don't let anyone tell you, "You cook. I don't know how."

When I met Merv, his idea of "homemade" was layering canned stuff in a casserole and putting it in an oven. Gross.

Here's what I say: If you can read, you can cook.

Here's Merv with Barbecued Ribs with Peanut-Chipotle Sauce, from his favorite cookbook, Bobby Flay's Bold American Cooking.

Merv's Menu
We usually try to have a variety of colors and textures (i.e. vary the food cooking techniques, like roasting, steaming, grilling, etc) in our menu.

To vary up the BBQ style and color, Merv made boiled/blanched asparagus and garlic mash potatoes.
