Restaurant Review: Aki 181 W. 4th St (btwn 6th/7th Aves)
It's my current favorite Japanese Restaurant, and they deliver to my store! Here are a few of my favorite dishes! The chef used to be the private chef to the Japanese Ambassador to the West Indies, so his dishes cater to a very traditional Japanese palate, but with a very creative tropical flair. Super tasty, TOTALLY a good deal for the $$$ (surprisingly affordable for good Japanese food!) and they deliver! If you're planning on impressing a date to dinner here (you will, because it's delicious AND they have really nice dishware & table settings), make sure to MAKE A RESERVATION! The place is TINY! You can view their full menu online: members.aol.com/akiw4

I had the following foods delivered, so they're in plastic plates, which just doesn't do it justice--check out the restaurant, they are really impressive! tel (212)989-5440

Uni Co-Co $9
I love scallops and I love uni (sea urchin), so this I had to try! The left side is layered like this from the bottom to top: shiso leaf, scallop sashimi, seaweed, wasabi tobiko, and on the right is coconut milk, which you pour over the whole thing. It's a very interesting mix of sweet and salty.

Jamaica Chicken $7
My husband wanted this appetizer, and at first, I must admit, I was a bit hesitant, but it was delectable! It's "jerk chicken rolled with a robust shrimp paste, vegetables, and a tangy mango teriyaki sauce with banana tempura."

I know, sounds weird, but it was strangely delicious!

Spicy Tuna Tartare $10
Okay, this photo looks bad, but that's my poor photo skills.... it was amazing!

Here's what the menu says: "Chopped tuna with scallion, red raisins, pinenuts, seaweed, coconut flake, spicy mayo and mango chutney soy sauce."

I was at first suspicious about having the coconut shavings on top of a salty dish, but again, I was pleasantly surprised!

Sawara Tataki $9
It's so good, I'm drooling just writing about it....

It's "seared Spanish mackerel, onion, pepper, carrot, scallion, sesame, pink peppercorn, with garlic & ginger sauce."

Need I say more? Yum.

Shinonome King Crab $16
"King crab, crabmeat, seaweed, cucumber, shinonome caviar and white trufle oil." That's what it says on the menu, and "unbelievably delicious" in my mind. The crabmeat was so tender & succulent, and I'm not sure what else was in the sauce, but it was slightly spicy, very subtle (as to not overpower the crab). Merv's new favorite food ever.

Tuna Mille-Feuille $9
Unbelieveable that it looks THIS PRETTY and it's delivery food? And it's $9? Hello!

It's slices of tuna sashimi with thin, crispy, Fuji-Apples, avocado, shiso and tobiko, witha n apple vinegar & white balsamic sauce. Sounds strange, but delectable as it is beautiful! The sweetness & crispness of the Fuji-apples, the soft and slightly salty taste of the sashimi & tobiko, and with the sauce--it's a party for your tastebuds in the most delightful way!

And as much as starfruits are pretty, they're usually too tart for me, but since it's Aki's and I expect nothing but the best, I tried it, and it was so sweet & delicious!

Spicy Chirashi $20
This is my favorite entree! I love Chirashi to begin with, but this one is different: rather than plain sushi rice (plain vinegared sushi rice), they mix it with egg, shiitake, sweet squash, fish powder, and on top of that, they put a thin layer of mesclun salad, and a good variety of sashimi on top, with 3 different kinds of spicy sauce!

It takes good alone, or you can eat the sashimi with a little soy sauce. At first, I was surprised to see mesclun salad on the chirashi, but it really compliments each other--the crisp texture and the slightly bitter taste of the greens go really well with the spicy-sweet of the sauces.

It's definitely my favorite Chirashi in Manhattan, and for $20, it's probably one of the best deals, too!

Aki Vegetable Sushi $18
For vegetarians, this is perhaps the most creative, innovative vegetarian sushi I've EVER come across, and even if you're not vegetarian, you'll be impressed with the presentation and taste!

Most vegetarians who don't eat seafood are usually limited to eating cucumber maki, avocado, and maybe pickled plum maki, but this one LOOKS like a nigiri sushi deluxe, but it's all vegetables!

The following were made to look and feel like nigiri sushi: avocado, hiji ki, shiitake, hearts of palm, plum caviar (looks like ikura, but takes like ume-shiso!), lotus root, and also has a roll of vegetarian roll, which was perhaps the best veggie roll I've ever had!

I truly love their attention to detail, and I have food delivered to me all the time, and I think their packaging is tops. They care and it shows! What an inspiration!
